Marc Buntaine is an entrepreneur focused on neurological and cancer therapy medical devices. Over the past 17 years, he has co-founded and directed the growth of three companies, each of which developed new therapeutic technologies in neurosurgery and cancer care and are now divisions of publicly traded medical companies.
In 2005, Marc became CEO of Still River Systems, a radiation oncology start-up company dedicated to commercializing a lower cost proton beam radiotherapy device for cancer treatment. Since 2005, Still River Systems has completed two rounds of financing and grown to forty employees. By 2007, Still River Systems had collected over $80M in hospital orders for this innovative technology, with first product delivery scheduled in 2008.
In 1999, Marc founded Zmed, a distributed PACS company, and then acquired an image-guidance license from Surgical Navigation Technologies (SNT) for application in radiation oncology. He directed the product development and market growth of Zmed until 2003, when he sold the company to Varian Medical Systems.
In 1995, Marc co-founded Surgical Navigation Technologies (SNT) and led its growth from being an early stage inventor of Image Guided Surgery (IGS) to market leadership in neuro and spine surgery, and then the sale of the company to Medtronic in 1998. SNT is today a $200M division of Medtronic.
In 1990, Marc became division manager for Elekta AB, the Gamma Knife company, and then became USA Region President for Elekta. Over five years, Marc developed Elekta’s market presence and acceptance for the Gamma Knife and other innovative technologies. Elekta is now a $1B company in neurosurgery and radiation oncology devices.
From 1986 to 1988, Marc was a consultant at Bain and Company. Prior to that, he was a Manager in the Finance and Corporate Strategy Group at Cummins Engine Company from 1981 to 1986.
Marc has an MBA from Yale SOM and a Bachelor of Arts from New College. He lives in Sherborn, MA with his wife Catherine. Marc is on the Board of Overseers at the Museum of Science in Boston and is active at the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and in local arts education.
