D. Ellen Shuman is vice president and chief investment officer of Carnegie Corporation of New York, managing a $1.9 billion portfolio, serving under President Vartan Gregorian. Prior to joining Carnegie Corporation in early 1999, Ms. Shuman served as director of investments at Yale University where she had responsibility for real estate and capital markets activities. She taught several courses at the Yale School of Management and Yale College on finance and investments.
Ms. Shuman has been a trustee of Bowdoin College since 1992. She served as vice chair from 1998 to 2003, and currently is a member of the investment, audit, and academic affairs committees. She also serves on the board of TIFF (The Investment Fund for Foundations), and as an investment advisor to the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation and the Independent Sector. During 2001 she joined the board of directors of MeriStar Hospitality Group, a publicly-traded company that owns a national portfolio of hotels throughout the United States. Ms. Shuman is also a member of the Pension Advisory Board of the New York Stock Exchange. She recently was elected as a director to General American Investors, one of the nation’s oldest closed-end funds.
Ms. Shuman received her CFA in 1992. She is a graduate of Bowdoin College and received a master's degree in public and private management from the Yale School of Management.
