An Overview of the New Yale SOM Campus

As the Yale School of Management redefines management education, it is also planning for a new campus that will both sustain the growing SOM community and truly reflect, in bricks and mortar, the school’s institutional ambitions.  Great institutions of enduring impact often have physical homes of architectural significance. As so many buildings on Yale’s campus demonstrate, architecture has the power to inspire and to reinforce the highest of aspirations.

The Yale School of Management is looking forward to its own new physical home— a 4.25-acre campus designed by Foster + Partners, the prominent firm chaired by Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate Lord Norman Foster.  Selected through an international invitational competition sponsored and championed by Yale President Richard C. Levin, Foster + Partners’ design concept for Yale SOM is as bold and innovative as any of the celebrated structures with which the firm has made its mark. The new Yale School of Management campus will thus take its place among the many significant architectural landmarks that already distinguish the Yale University campus.

Beyond its architectural significance, the new campus will incorporate state-of-the-art technology and best-practice classroom design. The school will apply the same principles of innovation and integration to the school’s technology environment that we have applied to our new MBA curriculum model, enabling a greater level of connectivity among the various constituencies, activities, and experiences that are central to our community. Beyond the technological innovations, the new campus will also be designed to harmonize with its location and with a commitment to environmental sustainability. Overall, the look of the campus and its interior will mix modern elements with more classic design, creating a contemporary campus that also incorporates time-honored Yale architectural traditions.

Foster + Partners are still in the process of finalizing design plans for the new campus, but we can already confirm a number of architectural features.  In addition to a spectacular courtyard that reflects Yale's tradition of extraordinary enclosed outdoor community spaces, there will be an open, spacious, light-filled arcade that will connect elements of the campus.  The facility will also have a media center and numerous other amenities, including a café where students, faculty and staff can gather and socialize; a business center for students as well as for recruiters, speakers and other guests who might be visiting campus; and an auditorium for conferences, lectures, performances, and community gatherings.
